Elvira P.
Avery
1837 - 1923ELVIRA PARAZADE KETCHUM was born on 18 May 1837 in Oswego County, New York, USA. She died on 24 Nov 1923 in New Albin, Allamakee, Iowa, USA. She is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, Minnesota. She married James Merritt Avery, son of John Avery and Sarah Ann Cooper about 1858 in Wisconsin (Common law marriage – presumed).

James Merritt Avery was previously married to SARAH CAMPBELL (they never divorced), daughter of ELSON CAMPBELL and HULDAH PHINNEY. James Avery was born on 08 Feb 1832 in New York. He died on 10 Feb 1913 in Cherry Valley, Lake, Michigan, USA.

Elvira P Ketchum was the daughter of ALEXANDER KETCHUM and LANA LAURA CAMPBELL. ALEXANDER R KETCHUM was born in 1815 in Dover, Duchess County, New York, USA. He died before 1900 in Canada, having raised another family there. Lana was the daughter of NATHAN CAMPBELL and MARY CHARITY MILSPAUGH and sister to ELSON CAMPBELL, son of Nathan. Therefore Elvira Ketchum and Sarah Campbell were 1st cousins. Lana was born about 1813 in New York. She died after 1895 in Allamakee County, Iowa, USA.

Elvira Parazade Ketchum (Avery) and James Merritt Avery had the following children:

ALDIE AVERY was born in 1859 in Poynette, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA. She died on 21 Oct 1897 in Winona County, Minnesota, USA. She married Elbridge Horatio Matteson about 1878. He was born on 23 Sep 1853 in New York. He died on 04 Sep 1938 in Winona, Minnesota.

ANNA GRACE AVERY was born in Mar 1860 in Poynette, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA. She likely died before 1910 in Spokane, Washington. She married Thomas Alexander Duff, son of James Duff and Mary Robinson on 27 Apr 1882 in New Albin, Allamakee, Iowa, USA. He was born in Sep 1855 in Dubuque County, IA. He died on 13 Oct 1926 in Spokane, Spokane, Washington.

ESTELLA P AVERY was born on 29 Oct 1864 in Poynette, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA. She died on 11 Jan 1936 in Winona County, Minnesota, USA. She married Giles Norman Ransom, son of G. P. Ransom M. D. and Mahalah Jenks on 29 Dec 1884 in New Albin. He was born on 31 Oct 1858 in Roscoe, Winnebago, Illinois, USA. He died on 04 Oct 1887 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois, USA.

LENA LILLIAN ELIZABETH AVERY was born about 1868 in Wisconsin. She died on 05 May 1930 in Lacrosse, Wisconsin.

James Merritt Avery and Sarah Campbell adopted two children, both males: JOHN EDWARD AVERY and DENNIS OHARE (or OHARA) AVERY. DNA research suggests that both these boys were Avery's by blood and possibly, if not probably, sons of James Merritt Avery. John Edward Avery was, perhaps, the natural son of James and Elvira. Due to family naming conventions Dennis O Avery was probably not a son of Elvira.

In 1892 and again in 1916, Elvira applied for a Civil War widow's pension, from Michigan in 1892 and from Iowa in 1916. Both applications were denied.

Elvira died 24 Nov 1923 at New Albin, Allamakee, Iowa, USA. Her body was shipped to Winona, Minnesota for burial. Her death certificate cites her father and mother as well as James Merritt Avery as husband.
