From the May 22, 2002 edition of the Wilson County News, Floresville, Texas:

Jessie Mae Ables of Stockdale died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at the age of 93.

Born in Stockdale on Dec. 18, 1908, she was the youngest of the six children of Jesse Lee and Christianna Josephine (Josie Harrison) Burris. Like her father, who was a country schoolteacher at the Caddo and Alum Creek schools, Mrs. Ables maintained a lifelong commitment to the belief that education is the key to a brighter future for every child and that opportunities for education should be open to all. She had high expectations of her students and was known to be strict, firm, no-nonsense, loving, kind, and playful, as the occasion required.

Mrs. Ables graduated from Stockdale High School in 1927 and attended Mary Hardin-Baylor and Southwest Texas State Normal School to earn her teaching certification. A year later she returned to the Stockdale area to her first job as a teacher in the rural Sunnyside School, where she taught for several years before taking time off for marriage and family. She also worked part-time for the Stockdale Telephone Company as "Central," as switchboard operators were known in pre-dial system days. In the 1950s, Mrs. Ables returned to the field of education, receiving her degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1957. During more than three decades devoted to teaching, she not only taught in rural schools, but also at various times operated a private kindergarten, became one of the pioneer teachers in the Head Start program, taught several grades in public school at the elementary level, and eventually served as principal of Stockdale Elementary School. Mrs. Ables retired in 1977, but continued to be an active member of the First Baptist Church of Stockdale and the Wilson County Retired Teachers Association for many years. She married John Hershel Ables, also of Stockdale, on Nov. 25, 1931.

Preceded in death by: husband, John Hershel Ables on May 5, 1979; five siblings, Henry Houston Burris (1907), Allie and Annie Burris (1913), George Bradford Burris (1969), and Clara Jo Burris Floyd (1984).

Survivors include: sons, Jesse Lee Ables and Arthur Owen Ables (Lea Anne); daughter, Jo Ann Ables Carson (W.C); grandchildren, Buck Ables (Sherry), John Arthur Ables, Kimberley Carson Tillisch (Jon), Chris Carson (KIatherine), Rachel Carson Buchanan (Matthew) and John David Carson; great grandchildren, Maegan Ables and Jeff Ables (Teresa); great great grandchildren, Kate Ables and Abby Ables and John Arthur Ables; sister-in-law, June Burris; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, in the First Baptist Church in Stockdale under the direction of Rev. Kenneth Wellman.

Interment followed in the Stockdale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were the grandchildren of Mrs. Ables.

Memorial gifts in honor of Mrs. Ables may be given to the First Baptist Church of Stockdale, P.O. Box 95, Stockdale, TX 78160, to the Stockdale Ex-Student/Teacher Association, or the Stockdale ISD Library Fund, both at P.O. Box 7, Stockdale, TX 78160.
