Army Cpl. Alexeev was assigned to 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Insurgents shot down a U.S. helicopter and Alexeev was part of a rescue team racing to the scene when a roadside bomb exploded underneath his Bradley in Abu Sayda. The crash was part of a complex attack by enemy forces who first shot down the helicopter, then used roadside bombs to kill troops rushing to the site. Alexandre moved from Moscow to southern California in 1999 as a teen. He loved America and looked forward to becoming a citizen. He graduated from Hawthorne High School then enrolled in computer courses at ITT and moved to Wilmington, California. In 2005 he decided to join the Army because he wanted to be independent and it would speed up the process for his citizenship. He volunteered for front-line duty as a scout in Iraq because he loved adventure – his platoon called themselves "Combat Freaks". It wasn't a surprise to those who knew him that he volunteered as a scout – one who seeks out the enemy and performs reconnaissance and surveillance missions. He wanted to continue his education when he left the military and become either a helicopter pilot or a police officer. Alexandre was a handsome, blue-eyed blonde who loved hockey, swimming, techno music and dancing. He was a positive person and was against complaining. He used to tell his family that in America they had everything and for them to be happy and appreciate what they have here. This was a man who had no political views, he just believed in people. He was proud of the way the Americans were making things better for Iraqis. Alexandre's coveted citizenship papers arrived at his mother's home just days after his death.
