Reynolds was born to William Cahoon and Mehitable Hodges. He had seven siblings: Daniel, Elizabeth, Mehitable, William, Elkana, Sally and Ebenezer. Reynolds married Thirza Stiles on 11 December 1810 in New Port, Herkimer, New York. They had seven children: William Farrington, Lerona Eliza, Pulaski Stephen, Daniel Stiles, Andrew, Julia Amina, and Mahonri Moriancumer. In 1834 the Prophet named and blessed Reynolds's seventh child, Mahonri Moriancumer. The Prophet explained, "The name I have given your son is the name of the brother of Jared (in the Book of Mormon); the Lord has just shown (or revealed) it to me."
A veteran of the War of 1812, and one of the first to accept the gospel of Christ by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kirtland, Ohio. Baptized by Parley P. Pratt and within a year was called by revelation to travel to Missouri and "preach the gospel" without purse or script (D&C 52:30). A counselor to Presiding Bishop Newel K. Whitney, and later as a counselor in the Stake Presidency in Kirtland.
The family journeyed to Missouri and settled among the Saints in the Adam-ondi-ahman Stake, until Governor Lilburn Boggs's extermination order forced them to flee to Illinois.
Reynolds served on the building committees for the Nauvoo House, the Mansion House, and the Nauvoo Temple. Reynolds and his family journeyed with the Saints to the Rocky Mountains and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. Reynolds died in Salt Lake City and is buried there.
