Oklahoma Governor. He grew up in Missouri, where he attended public schools and the Steelville Academy. He taught school and read law there, beginning a law practice in 1861. After the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted on the Union side, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. At war's end he entered politics in the Republican party. He was appointed circuit judge and rose to become Associate Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court and regularly held court all over Oklahoma Territory. In 1892 he was appointed Oklahoma Territorial Governor and served until May 10, 1893. He remained in Oklahoma at the completion of his term as a business man supporting statehood, seeing it become the 46th state on November 16, 1907. He died after a long illness.
