It was a Wednesday and after a long day of learning at Washington School, James headed out towards the car that was to take him home. He paused behind that car, which was driven by the family chauffeur, and kneeled down to tie his shoe lace. Concurrently, the boy's chauffeur noticed a buggy pulling up in front of the automobile and put the car in reverse to give the buggy some room. James was not able to get out of the way of the heavy car and was killed. James was buried two days later on Friday, October 9, 1914. Local burial records indicate that he was 11-1/4 years old. James was the son of Dr. W.C. Abaly.
