Reginald William Fitzhardinge Berkeley was born in Lucknow, Oudh, India. Descended from the 2nd Earl of Berkeley, his branch of the family went out to India from Gloucester, England in the 1700's. Reginald moved from India to England with his family and was educated at the internationally renowned Eton College in Eton, Berkshire (traditionally part of Buckinghamshire), a mile north of Windsor Castle.

Reginald married Caroline Mary Oldham at Little Chart, Kent, England.

In 1920 Reginald, Caroline and their daughter Kathleen Beatrice Berkeley left England and came to the United States, first to Stockton and then to San Francisco, California. He worked as an economist and journalist, writing on economic and political matters. He built a home on Tamal Road in Forest Knolls in Marin County, California where he lived until his death in 1939.

Reginald had a strong interest in genealogy and spent much of his later years studying the Berkeley family. His great grandchildren feel fortunate to have all of his original notes on his genealogical studies, complete with charts showing his descent from British nobility through pre-Norman conquest England.
