Floria Lanzi was born in St. Paul, Virginia, the third daughter of Cesare and Philomena Marriotti Lanzi. At six months of age, her parents took her back to their farm in Norcia, Perugia, Italy.
There, she was raised by her grandparents, Luciano and Guditta Verrucci Marriotti. In 1923, Floria's mother requested that she return to America. She arrived in Keystone, West Virginia at the age of 16 with other family and neighbors. Later, she moved to Detroit, Michigan.
Floria married Armando Gubbiotti on January 3, 1925. He was killed in an industrial accident at the Ford Motor Company on September 19, 1925. Their daughter, Armandina Gubbiotti was born on December 8, 1925.
Floria was then employed by Ford Motor Company where she met Domenico Iacovo thru mutual friends. They were married a short time later.
Floria and Domenico had a common interest in the worker's rights and became active in the unionization of the automobile industry, at the risk of their jobs and personal safety.
Domenico went to work for the Chrysler Corporation in 1933 until his retirement in 1966. Their daughter, Michelina Gloria Iacovo was born on December 21, 1939. Floria left the automobile industry to work for Sander's Confectionary and Bakery Company in the bakery division. She retired from Sanders in the 1950s.
When Domenico died in 1979, Floria continued to live in the their east side Detroit home built in 1956 by Armandina's husband, Edward Zakrzewski. In 1981, she moved to Sugar Land, Texas to live with Armandina and Edward and their children.
Floria was well known for her authentic Italian country cooking, reflecting her girlhood in Norcia and her employment with Sanders. She was an avid walker, finally getting her driver's license in the late 1960s. She delighted in homemaking and in her grandchildren, who often spent weekends with her, at the children's request.
She spent her remaining years happily running her daughter's household and taking several trips to see her daughter Michelina (Mickey), son-in-law Robert Morgan and their children in Colorado. She also enjoyed a special journey to San Antonio with both her daughters. She was frequently called 'Ma' or 'Nanna' by those who knew her, happily cooking favorite meals and desserts for family and the many friends she made in Texas and Colorado who also fell in love with her.
Floria passed away at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston from a stroke brought on by heart disease, just short of her 90th birthday.
