Religious Figure, Educator. He was the founder and first president of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Born Edward Frederick Sorin, he became a French Roman Catholic priest in 1838, and two years later, he joined the Congregation of Holy Cross. With a group of six other priests, he came to the United States in 1841, settling in Indiana after traveling from New York City mainly by boat on various waterways. He helped to establish the community of French Sisters of Holy Cross at nearby Bertrand, Michigan. On January 14, 1844, he obtained a charter from the Indiana legislature for the University of Notre Dame, an institution of higher learning for men, where he served as president until 1865. In 1854, for the French sisters, he founded St. Mary's College, a small liberal arts college for women near Notre Dame. He began publishing "Ave Maria" magazine in 1865 and served as provincial superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross in the United States until 1868, after which he was superior general until his death.
