The son of a Jewish grocery store owner, he was born Sidney Kimmelman. At the age of 15, he changed his name after seeing the movie, "Shanghai Gesture" starring Victor Mature who portrayed a character named "Omar". He had a strong interest in numerology, which led him to use a formula to change his name to "Sydney" and add an extra "R" for his version of Omarr. Besides numerology, he had a boyhood interest in magic and the occult. Still a teenager, he wrote his first book, ''Sydney Omarr's Private Course on Numerology'' and sold mimeographed copies for $2. To continue with the use of numerology, he states that he join, at the age 17, the military during World War II on April 4, 1944 for luck, and claims he helped the war effort with his predictions. After the military, he studied journalism at Mexico City College. This prepared him to became a newspaper reporter, which lead to advancement in his profession and getting his own newspaper column. At one point in his career, he had a "pay-per-call phone line" to give predictions to his followers; many of his followers were well-known Hollywood celebrities. . In 1971, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, started to decline slowly, first losing his sight in the early 1990's and then becoming completely paralyzed. (bio by: Linda Davis)
