Thomas Nelson Barnes, served in the United States Air Force, 1949 to 1977. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
In 1974, he was appointed as the fourth Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Air Force. In this capacity he advised senior military leadership on matters concerning welfare, effective utilization and progress of the enlisted members of the Air Force. He was the first African-American to serve in the highest senior enlisted capacity of any of the U.S. Armed Forces. He served in this capacity until his retirement from the United States Air Force in 1977.
