John J. Wooden was the youngest child of John Henry Wooden and Effie Mae (McCoy) Wooden. His brothers and sisters were Claude, William, Paul, Hester, Clara, Thelma and Edna. On November 4, 1942, he married Lavonne R. Quakenbush. One month later, he was called into service and spent five and a half years in the Army.
John and Lavonne had five children: John Alfred, Sandra Kaye (Gullion), the twins Gary Lee and Larry Joseph, and Beth Ann (Parrish).
John was a deputy sheriff for the state of Indiana and superintendent of the Department of Transportation. He also worked for the Indiana State Highway Department.
