An Amerindian leader who led the Tupiniquim people of Piratininga and other tribes, who evenutally converted to Catholicism, baptized by Saint José de Anchieta SJ., with the name Martim Afonso. His conversion would make him a strategic ally and protector of the Jesuits and the Portuguese, such that his name appears on letters to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and King João III of Portugal.
