"Daniel Addis Died: Saturday, March 03, 2007. Age: 86. Daniel Addis passed away peacefully in his sleep March 3. His favorite opera arias were playing softly in the room. His family and little dog were at his side. Mr. Addis was born Dec. 14, 1920, in Clarkston, the only child of Margaret Hammond and Leroy Addis. Dan's childhood friends included the children of his sister, Ruth Liebler and brother, William Dunston. Mr. Addis's relatives were among the first settlers in the Territory of Michigan. He traced his roots back to Simon Addis who served in the Revolutionary War. As a boy, Dan scooped ice cream in the store built by his father on the corner of Main and Washington streets in downtown Clarkston, now the Olde Village Cafe. The family home at 44 E. Washington is still occupied by a cousin, Carol Walter, and Dan's childhood growth is marked on a doorjamb in the home. A Hammond ancestor laid the cornerstone for the First Methodist Church in Clarkston. From the time that Mr. Addis was a small boy, his mother took him by the hand to sing in that same church. Classical hymns remained music that he loved, along with the opera favorites that he was allowed to play on his mother's wind-up phonograph. No surprise that he majored in music and made a career of teaching music in the Waterford school system. For many years, his singing was shared with the Clarkston community at the Memorial Day services at Lakeview Cemetery, at the weddings of friends, and in his role as King Caspar in performances of 'Amahl and the Night Visitors.' With such loving parents, Dan had a spirit and a personality that made him an ideal teacher. No child was ever turned away from singing so school performances were large and enthusiastic. As adults, many of those former students wrote to him with great affection. Dan and Virginia moved to Bellingham, Wash., in the early 1980's and his life there had many associations that gave him pleasure: the Community Food Co-op where the staff voted him customer of the year, the Whatcom County Library system, where he was a board member, and the Bookmobile, which kept him supplied with the many books he read each week. Also dear to his heart was the Bellingham Music Club, many of whose talented and knowledgeable members visited him often during the weeks he was at home under hospice care. Mr. Addis had a great loving and friendly spirit. In Clarkston and Bellingham, he loved his neighbors, and helped make the whole community a delightful, civilized place to live. No matter where he went Dan inspired friendship. He learned everyone's name, and treated all with respect and humor. His family, his fortunate wife, Virginia, his beloved son Daniel and daughter Ruth (children of his marriage to the late Leda Miller of Clarkston), his beloved granddaughters Anlyn and Kelly Addis, and his many stepchildren and grandchildren were enriched by having him in their lives. The wonderful memories we have of Dan will bring us joy and comfort forever."
