The grave marker is incorrect; Melvin was born in 1889, not 1888.

Announcement - The Canton Repository - 06/21/1889

The handsome countenance of Mr. John Yost of the firm Yost and Lape, is brilliantly illuminated with smiles today, caused by the entrance of a nine pound boy into his family this morning. Mother and child are doing well.

Melvin's grave marker states that he served in the U.S. Navy as a GMGC: a GMGC is a Gunners Mate - Guns, and the "C" stands for Chief Petty Officer (NCO rank E-7).

The GMGC rate/rank therefore stands for Gunner's Mate (Guns) Chief.

Melvin served aboard the Battleship USS Wyoming, the Battleship USS West Virginia of the Pacific Fleet, and the Battleship USS Pennsylvania of the Atlantic Fleet. He was CPO of the forward turret gun crew, the battery of the ships largest guns.

Melvin is in the U.S. Federal Census in 1910 aboard the USS West Virginia moored in California.

The date when Melvin married his wife Marie Hilma Yost is not known. It is believed that they had no children.
