Michael Kroll was a US Marine Corps Sergeant who won five battle stars and the Purple Heart in Vietnam. His mother Mary was a cleaning lady who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. She said she used to "go to mass every morning and pray that God might send him home." In late March, 1967, Sgt. Kroll was on leave and visited his mother in the hospital every day where she was hospitalized with a broken hip. On April 3rd, Kroll was in Greenwich Village when he saw a sailor arguing with two young men. Kroll intervened and took the sailor into his car. Later, they passed the same two young men. One of them pulled a sawed-off shotgun from under his jacket and shot Sgt. Kroll in the face. He was 21. A Marine honor guard escorted the flag draped coffin to St. Stanilaus Roman Catholic Church. Mrs. Kroll followed the procession in a wheelchair pushed by her son John.
