Renee Applewhite was born on May 22, 1958 in Fresno, California to the late Thurman and Marion Applewhite. She went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 7:06 a.m. at Community Regional Medical Center following a courageous battle with Mixed Connective Tissue and Interstitial Lung Disease.

Renee lived in Fresno all her life. She went to Fresno Colony, Ivy Junior High School, Washington Union and later graduated from Edison High School in 1977, and won best dressed all four years of high school.

After graduating from high school, Renee attended Fresno City College and majored in Forensic Criminology. Renee was one of the first African-American teacher's assistant at California State University, Fresno's Day Care Center. She graduated from Caesar Chavez Adult School as a Medical Assistant and Certified Nurse's Aide and completed all the prerequisites for the Clovis Adult Licensed Vocational Nursing Program before she became ill.

Renee was a fun-loving, beautiful spirited person. She loved watching movies at her dear friend Mel Behn's house, exploring garage sales with her sisters, and setting up garage sales with her friend Mary Easter-Garrett. Renee's loving heart and warm spirit will be cherished and missed by those whose life she touched. She had a passion for sketching and designing unique clothing, making floral arrangements, and loved interior decoration.

Renee leaves to cherish her memory, her only child Dominique Howell, husband Holly Howell, and her granddaughter Hailey Howell; sisters: Ann Butts (oldest), Phyllis Applewhite, Jeanette Tatum, husband Kenneth Tatum, Valerie Applewhite, Karen Applewhite-Bagby(preceded her in death), and her brother, Curtis Applewhite; nieces: Lisa McCray, Eboni Younger-Riehl, and Shalonda Young; nephews: Jamari Reams, Lamont Lockett, Michael Younger, Jr., and Ernest Bagby, Jr.; eleven great nieces; 6 great-nephews, and one great-great nephew.

"A LETTER TO MY MOTHER
Dear Mama, I never got the opportunity to say my last goodbyes, but I know that you loved me, Holly and Hailey dearly. Every time I came to visit you, I never left empty handed. You always made sure to give me something rather it was your last dime or anything you had available. There is no instruction book on raising a child, but you made every effort to make sure I had the very best, and raised me to the best of your ability, and I appreciate everything you have done for me. You never let anything stop you, and you always had faith that things would get better, and I have carried on the same trait. I am so thankful that you were able to see me get married, finish college and spend time with your granddaughter Miss Hailey. Your life, and giving spirit has made an impact on so many people, and you are deeply missed, loved and appreciated. I love you Mom. Until we meet again." ~Dominique Peska-Howell~
