Notes: Lieutenant Commander Ashall, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of the Attack Squadron 85, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS AMERICA (CVA-66). On August 28, 1968 he was the bombardier/navigator of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6B) on an armed reconnaissance mission in the Vinh Son area of North Vietnam, when the aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

***** Gladys A. Ashall - Mother of Alan - Gladys A. Ashall, 89, born May 16, 1911, died Saturday morning, Feb. 17, 2001, at East Georgia Medical Center in Statesboro, Ga. She was born in Lumberport, W.Va., and was a 65-year resident of Montana. She had lived in Statesboro since May 1998.
She was educated in West Virginia and graduated from Lumberport High School in 1931. She attended Carroll College in Helena, where she received her registered nurse certification. She was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings.
She was married for 58 years to Frederick (Fredric)(Born in Montana) C. Ashall, who died in 1993. Her son, Navy Lt. Comdr. Alan F. Ashall, was listed as missing in action in Vietnam in August 1968. Mrs. Ashall spent 30 years as an activist in the MIA organization searching for her son. She was also a published writer and a 10-year member of the Montana Institute of the Arts in Butte.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia J. Ashall Vail (Born in Montana) of Brooklet, Ga.; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Feb. 22 at Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist Mortuary with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.

***** Alan was my Uncle and very dear to me, even though I was very young when he died. He was a wonderful and very brave man who gave his life in service to his country. While the bio indicates that he was single, he was actually married and left behind a young widow. I have many of his personal effects, pictures and letters which I treasure dearly. To this day, he is lovingly remembered by his family and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. I would like to sincerely thank the person who created this record. It is good to know that there are others out there who remember the sacrifices of our nation's hero's, even the ones from 40 years ago.
