French writer, a main character of the surrealism. He was a strong friend of Breton, also a member of the Communist Party. In 1928 his collected poems "Le Grand Jeu" was published. He took part in the Spanish Civil War, then he moved to Mexico. He returned to Paris only in 1948. He died there in 1959. Breton said about him: "He was my dearest and oldest battle comrade".
