Director. He was a German modernist theatre director as well as a producer. From his point of view, the theatre has an agitational and propagandistic function for his radical political agendas. He was known for his staging, which used multi-level scaffoldings and complex lighting to obtain real-life performances. After returning from the frontline in World War I, he became a member of the Berlin Dada movement and was a proclaimed Marxist. In 1918, he joined the newly founded German Communist Party. He worked as a theatre director at first at Volksbühne, then founded his own companies. In 1934, while in the Soviet Union, he made his only film. In 1936 he moved to Paris, then to the United States, where in New York he taught Dramatic Workshop. He was the teacher of artists such as Marlon Brando and James Dean. After World War II, he returned to Germany to direct Freie Volksbühne. He died in Starnberg in 1966.
