Martha Townsend was my Great Great Grandmother. She was of Cherokee descent. Martha was married (7 November 1845 in LA) to the Rev. W.S. Townsend Sr. (1814-1864). Together, they raised a large family. When Rev. Townsend drown in the Amite River in 1864, she moved her family to Blairstown, LA and bought our family homestead, Pine Acres. It has been said that Martha smoked a little clay pipe. Martha was a member of The Methodist Episcopal Church of The South. She died at The Old House, the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Townsend Jr. in 1918 and is buried in the Kelly Irwin Cemetery, Blairstown, LA.
