Despite his grave marker giving his place of death as Brashear City in Louisiana, all bodies headed for burial in the Northeast had to pass through NYC and be recorded by the city for health reasons. The record shows the body of PD Allen, age 27, born in Salem, Mass., arrived on Jun 13, 1863. It records his death as June 3 . It is noted he is a soldier who died of wounds in New Bern, N.C. (there were several Union hospitals there), and is headed to Salem, Mass., for interment. Body to be released to JS Snow.
