Born in San Francisco on March 14, 1919, George grew up in Burlingame, California. He graduated from Burlingame High School in 1937. After two years of indifferent college attendance, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in late 1939. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater in a combat aviation photo-reconnaissance squadron. He was eventually stationed at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and purchased a home in Santa Ana in 1950. He then served in the Korean conflict and was instrumental in the intelligence preparation for the Inchon landing. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a Captain when he retired from the Marine Corps in January 1960.
He returned to college and in two years of intense study earned a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in biological sciences from California State University Long Beach - while supporting his wife and seven sons as a freelance photographer. In September 1962, he started his teaching career at Savanna High School in Anaheim, where he taught science for 20 years.
After retirement, he worked as a computer consultant, supported Christian missionaries and traveled extensively with his wife, Esther True Brown, who passed away in 1998.
George started attending Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Santa Ana in the early 1970s, attracted to the vibrant community of believers. It was an important source of spiritual and social interaction for him during the next 40 years. He sang in the choir and volunteered in support of several church programs.
George is survived by seven sons, 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. There is a memorial service at Trinity (on Prospect Ave.) on Saturday August 23, at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the U.S. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (mcsf.org) in the name of Captain George H. Brown, USMC (Retired).
