PRINCETON - Clarence William Akers, 84, of 187 Dolittle Lane went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 19. He passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield as a result of complications from diabetes.
Clarence was born April 13, 1919 at Arista to Charlie and Florence Justice Akers.
Clarence was a shuttle car operator with 26 years of service working for Consol Coal Co. He was employed at the Weynoka Coal Company in Arista until his retirement. He was a member of the UMWA.
Mr. Akers served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the 3rd Infantry Division as Private First Class fc. 1st Class. His tour of duty took him to Africa and Italy. He was wounded in Sicily and returned to the US in the Mid 40s and received a Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a former member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 31 of Princeton and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3112 of Bluewell.
He was educated in Mercer County and was of the Holiness faith and also he attended the Echoes From Calvary Church.
Clarence was an avid outdoorsman who loved gardening and producing "the largest" German Tomatoes in the community. He also enjoyed flea marketing, gun trading, fishing and coon hunting. He was a former member of the National Coon Hunters' Association.
In addition to his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by one daughter, Pauline Gay Akers; five brothers, Claborne, Twins Ray and Roy, Jesse and Otis Akers; one half brother, Murray Cruise; a half sister, Virginia Cruise; and a grandson, Mitchell Wayne Johnson.
