A star that shone brightly for an all-too-brief moment, Skylar Jade "Princess" Dials, was a beacon of love, energy, and vivacious spirit that left an indelible mark on those who were fortunate to be a part of her short, yet impactful life.

Born on February 4, 2003, in Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia, Skylar arrived into the world as a radiant light. This light, while tragically dimmed on December 22, 2012, when she was just nine years old, continues to glow in the hearts of those who loved her and had the privilege to witness her youthful exuberance.

Known to those closest to her as "Princess," Skylar's brief journey on earth was marked by her love for art, her affection for animals, and a 'larger than life' personality that captured everyone she met. She was a fourth-grade student at Orr's Elementary School in Griffin and attended the Griffin Centerpoint Church and the Landmark Church of God. The joy she brought into every space she occupied, the laughter she ignited with her antics, and the depth of her young soul were testament to the spirited and loving individual she was.

Her mother, Ivy Dials, her brother, Travis Hoard, her grandmother, Betty Rickman, and her numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and her guardians and loving cousins, Renae and Robert Lupes, all had the opportunity to witness and cherish the bright light that was Skylar. Her memory remains alive, woven into their lives with threads of love and loss.

Yet the story of Skylar Dials is not simply about her vibrant life, but also about the senseless tragedy that abruptly ended it. On a chilling day in December 2012, Skylar, while walking near her home in Griffin, vanished. A 42-year-old man named Shane Collett, a neighbor and a deceptive participant in the search for Skylar, was later arrested for her murder. The collective shock of the community rippled through Griffin, a horrifying incident that would continue to cast a somber shadow on the town for years to come.

But the memory of Skylar was not allowed to dim under the weight of this tragedy. Rather, it shone brighter, defiant against the horrific actions of one man. The community, her family, and friends rallied, the strength of their collective love a testament to the impact Skylar had made during her brief time on earth. They worked together to ensure that justice was served and the man who had caused such devastation was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

In the days following the terrible discovery, the community came together to mourn Skylar and celebrate her life. On Thursday, December 27, 2012, a funeral service was held at the sanctuary of the Griffin Centerpoint Church. Pastors Tracy Stone and Rebecca Brannon presided over the service, commemorating a life that, while short, had been filled with warmth, joy, and love. Skylar's final resting place is the old section of Oak Hill Cemetery, a serene and quiet location fitting for a princess.

Skylar's family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Griffin Spalding County Humane Society or to an animal charity of choice, in honor of Skylar's love for animals. This act of kindness and remembrance was a tribute to Skylar's gentle soul and compassionate nature, her legacy continuing in the care of the animals she loved so much.

With the passage of time, the pain of losing Skylar has not lessened, but the community, her family, and friends have found strength in their memories of her. They find solace in the belief that one day they will be reunited with their beloved Skylar, never to be separated again. For them, she remains their shining star, their "Princess," their loving girl who drew wonderful pictures, who loved animals, and who filled their lives with joy.

Remembering Skylar Jade Dials, the light of her short life continues to illuminate the hearts of those who loved her. Even in her absence, she continues to inspire, reminding everyone of the power of love, the importance of community, and the enduring spirit of a little girl whose life, though tragically cut short, had such an extraordinary impact. Her legacy continues to live on, a powerful beacon against the dark tragedy that befell her.

May Skylar's memory inspire us to uphold the values she held dear – compassion for animals, love for art, and an infectious zest for life. To her family, friends, and the community of Griffin, my heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort in your memories of Skylar and strength in your shared love for her. In remembering Skylar, we pay tribute to the light she was and will continue to be in your hearts.
