She was born on a beautiful winter morning to the late Gordon and Marian Coleman on January 17, 1916, in Wilmington, Delaware. On Sunday, May 31, 2009, God sweetly called Lillian to His heavenly kingdom for eternal rest, at the Taylor Hospice, Ridley Park, PA.
Lillian, affectionately known as "Sock", moved with her family moved to Chester, PA, at an early age, where she was raised and attended the Chester Public Schools. Eager to enhance her beauty culture skills, Lillian furthered her studies at the Spriggs and Donalds School of Beauty Culture, and worked as a beautician for many years. In her later years because of her love for children, Lillian worked for the Delaware County Head Start Program, as a Teacher's Assistant. Subsequently, she worked for the Delaware County Foster Grandparent's Program for the Elwyn Child Development Center and Kidz First. Lillian was united in holy matrimony to her sweetheart, the late Julius "Rabbit" Armstrong, who lovingly referred to her as "Stockings." Their love flourished for 50 plus years, until God called him home in 1996. Although "Rabbit" and "Sock", as they were affectionately called, did not have any biological children of their own, God blessed them to share their abundance of love by being Godparents, Aunts and Uncles to many! Lillian truly loved God and was faithful and dedicated to adhering to what "thus saith the Lord." She was a faithful and hardworking member of the Murphy A.M.E. Church for 74 years, serving as a nursery school teacher, under the leadership of the late Rev. Donald F. Mims, and teacher of the 'little folk" for the Citizens for Acting Now (CAN) program. Lillian also played an integral part and was active in the preparation of Murphy's Women's Day programs. She enjoyed reading the Bible and listening to religious programs on a daily basis, which enabled her to share the 'good news' that Jesus saves. Lillian was also a member of the Leah Chapter #27, Order of the Eastern Star (Prince Hall), and served on the Ladies Auxiliary of the John F. L. Reason YMCA, in which she was honored in 1980. She also served as a Committee Woman and worked the Polls in the 10th Ward.
Lillian was dearly loved by all and had a third title bestowed upon her, "Mrs. A" by members of her community, because she was a concerned neighbor and friend! She was always eager to display the love of Christ to her family and those in need, and was a gracious LADY who gave willingly of herself. She listened, provided encouragement, and loved you unconditionally! She did not leave you guessing, as she was straightforward when talking, but also humorous and a lot of fun to be around! In 93 years, Lillian lived a full and complete life. She shared much joy with others and was dearly loved by her family, extended family and friends! To God be the glory for Lillian has been redeemed!
