Helen was the youngest of the twelve children of Oscar and Anna (Wayrynen) Komula. She married Elwood "Woody" Barkkari on June 14, 1947; together, they had one daughter, who gave them three grandchildren.

She was a tireless promoter of tourism in the Keweenaw, a hotelier and restaurateur in Chassell, and a faithful Lutheran.
