Johan Alamaa was born in a linguistically-Finnish region of Sweden in 1822. He married Maria Kexi/Keksi on October 25, 1846, and the two had five children. They later migrated to Skallev, Norway, where their children were confirmed. In July of 1873, in the company of their younger sons Christian and Henrik, Johan and Maria arrived in the United States. They settled in Hancock, where their older sons Johan and Erick resided.
Johan was widowed by 1880. He took up the occupation of carpenter until chronic nephritis claimed his life in 1906. He was survived by his sons Henrik and Erick.
He was the grandfather of Erick Arnof, John Ronald, Edward, and Mamie Johnson.
