Frances W. Barnes, 85, of Stonington, died early Monday morning, February 5, 2007 at Westerly Hospital.

She was born in Westerly, RI, July 14, 1921, the daughter of Eben P. and Elizabeth Gavigan Weeden. She attended local schools and graduated from Westerly High School with the class of 1939. She married the man she always referred to as her "Best Friend", Frederick Amos Barnes on August 6, 1949 in Ashaway, RI. Throughout their life together Frances treasured every minute spent with Fred. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage. Sadly he predeceased her on July 17, 2002.

For many years she and Fred ran the family dairy farm in Mystic along Route 27. After selling the farm they, along with her brother-in-law, Robert Barnes, owned and operated Barnes Moving and Storage Inc. Frances coordinated the day to day workings of the entire operation from her office. A strong woman, considered the matriarch of the business, she was very personable, always having something pleasant to say to anyone she met. They loved to travel and together they did so extensively throughout the United States and Canada often from the comfort of their motor home. In later years they enjoyed spending their winters in Florida.

Family was most important to her, enjoying her children, and her sisters and brothers. She was a UCONN Girls Basketball Fan, enjoyed going to Greyhound Rescue organization events but most of all enjoyed her independence, still driving up to her recent illness, and often taking scenic rides just for the pure joy of it. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Ashaway.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, and a sister, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Eileen Stewart and Eben Weeden.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2007 at 10:00 AM at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, CT. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at the funeral home from 9 to 10:00 am prior to the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 238 West Town Street, Norwich, CT 06360.
