Otis Wm. Laughlin, Sr, was the husband of Florence M. Carnell Laughlin, marred in 1922. They had five children, Rosabelle Laughlin Shelburn, Thomas Olin Laughlin, Florence Lee "Babe" Laughlin Nelson, JoAnne Laughlin Howerton, and Otis William Laughlin, Jr. They lost JoAnn in 1957 of a malignant brain tumor. She was only 29. Then Rose passed away in 1966 at the age of 43, of ovarian cancer.
Grandpa Laughlin was a real "character". His favorite thing to do was give "The Third Degree",as we called it, to all future husbands and wives of his children and grandchildren, and he was well known for making "unscheduled visits" to the homes of his daughters and granddaughters to make sure their husbands were taking proper care of them, too. He was very stern and strict, but had a fine-tuned sense of humor and loved his family without reservation. He was deeply hurt by the loss of two of his daughters at such a young age. We always felt safe when Grandpa was with us. He just plain would not let anyone hurt us. And nobody was ever brave enough to try.
He worked as a car salesman for most of his adult life, and had loyal customers because he would never let a car off his lot without making sure it was in top running condition so he had a great reputation for his integrity in that department.
He died of a massive heart attack following surgery after complications of phlebitis.
