Barbara Hulsey "Babs" Barnette, 82, resident of 511 New Market Street, died July 27, 2012 at her home.
Born in Abbeville, September 30, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Henry L. and Mary Cunningham Hulsey and was a widow of J. Edwin Barnette, former Vice President of Greenwood Packing Co. Mrs. Barnette had a long history of community service, having served on the Founding Board of Directors for Cambridge Academy, Medical University of South Carolina Board of Visitors, Governor's Community Improvement Board and the South Carolina Roadside Council Board.
Mrs. Barnette was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and past president of the Woman of the Church. Mrs. Barnette began her work with garden clubs in 1953 when she joined the Holly Garden Club in Greenwood. She served as President of the Greenwood Federation of Garden Clubs, Past President of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. and was a master Flower Show judge and Environmental Education facilitator.
Her awards and recognition include: Woman of the Year for the Greenwood Federation of Gardens Clubs, Woman of the Year for the Garden Club of South Carolina, the Order of the Palmetto given by former Governor Richard Riley, a Conservation Medal from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Presidential Citation from the National Council of State Garden Clubs.
Surviving are a daughter Mary Barnette Ferguson and son-in-law, Dr. Fred Ferguson of Greenwood; two grandsons, Dee Burnett and wife Leanne of Greenwood and Will Underwood and wife Jamie of Mt. Pleasant; three great-grandchildren, Abigail and Edwin Burnett and Marlin Underwood; a brother, Larry Hulsey and wife Nancy of Greenwood. Mrs. Barnette was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara "Bunny" Barnette.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday at her home on New Market Street with Dr. David Mayo officiating. Burial will be in the Barnette Farm Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Rick Henderson, Duke Burnett, Dr. Donald Underwood, Frank Workman, Lee Maxwell and Billy Nicholson.
The family is at the home where they will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
