George Welborn Ballentine, Sr., 95, resident of 617 Henrietta Avenue, died Sunday, August 7, 2016 at Self Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Born in Easley, September 23, 1920, he was a son of the late Walter Major Ballentine and Sarah Mullinex Ballentine and widower of his wife of 56 years, Rebecca Busbee Ballentine, who predeceased him in December 2005. He was a graduate of Easley High School and Clemson College, Class of 1942, where he earned a degree in Dairying. Mr. Ballentine was a US Army Veteran of World War II having served in General George Patton's 3rd Army, 5th Infantry Division and would later retire from the US Army Reserve with the Rank of Major.

He returned to Greenwood in 1946 to join his brother, Charlie Ballentine, at Ballentine Motor Co. where, in 1950, he would become Dealer and Owner of Ballentine Ford which is recognized as one of Ford Motor Co.'s longest running dealers with over 66 years in business.

For over 60 years he has been a devoted member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he was also a member of the Mason Sunday School Class and served as Chairman of the Board of the Church Building Committee. Mr. Ballentine was also a member of the Greenwood Lions Club, former Greenwood Chamber of Commerce Board Member and served on the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association Board of Directors for many years. In 1962 he was elected to the Ford National Dealer Council where he served 2 terms.

Surviving are his children, Anna Ballentine Steele and husband Fletch of Winston Salem, NC and George W. "Bal" Ballentine, Jr. and wife Kit of Greenwood; six grandchildren, Sarah B. Madden and husband Griff, Jessica K. Ballentine, George W. "Wells" Ballentine, III, Walter M. Steele and wife Amii, Preston M. Steele and Tyler B. Steele and wife Samantha and one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Ann Steele.

Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Main Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Phil Thrailkill officiating.

Private family burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
