Member of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR).
Private Jacob Kovko - 3816117 (8229393) was killed with a 9mm Browning to his right temple during his deployment in Iraq. Confusion surrounds the exact circumstances of his death as there were 2 colleagues in the same room at the time. Jacob who came from Briagolong In Gippsland was the 1st Australian service man to die in Iraq. He leaves behind his widow Shelley and 2 children.
During his repatriation the wrong body was sent home to his family. His widow, Shelly blamed the Australian Embassy in Kuwait for failing to identify the body at a Kuwait morgue and authorising the return of the wrong body. Jacob was finally returned home a week later.

A plaque was unveiled to commemorate local soldier Jacob Kovco. Private Kovco, from Briagolong, was the first Australian soldier killed in the Iraq War.
