William Childress

SALISBURY - William Montgomery Childress, 84, of 612 Cruse Rd., Salisbury, died Thursday, September 6, 2007 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after a short fight with cancer.

He was born Feb. 26, 1923 in Rowan County to the late Gus Childress and Cordia Stallings Childress. He was educated in the Iredell County Schools. In 1987 he retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon, Inc., later he worked for Winn-Dixie for 6 years. He was a member of Rockwell Church of God, Rockwell for over 40 years where he served on the mens' council and was Sunday School Superintendent for a number of years.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by brothers James Childress, Raymond Childress and Carl Childress; sister Helen Stutts and two grandsons Dwayne St. John and Christopher Goodwin.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Martha Helms Childress; daughters Carol Goodwin and husband Lawrence of Rockwell, Eva Kerley and husband Bennie of China Grove; granddaughter, Tamara Chambers and husband Steven of Albemarle; grandson John Lawrence Goodwin, Jr. and wife Jeannie of Cartersville, Ga. and five great-grandchildren, Rachel, Miller and Elizabeth Chambers and Sarah and John Lawrence Goodwin, III.

Service: 2 p.m. Monday, Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Duane Holt and Rev. Charles David Salmons officiating. Burial to follow in West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Whitley's Funeral Home.
