Phil died suddenly and unexpectedly from a severe attack of asthma less than a month before his 26th birthday. His wife Maura, of just over two years, was at his side, they had no children. Phil and Maura had known each other since they were children in California where they had both grown up. Maura had been the best friend of Phil's elder sister (and only sibling) Phyllis E.
