Betsy was the eldest daughter of William and Molly Kirkpatrick Andrews from Virginia. Little is known about how or why she ended up in Madison County, Alabama by the age of twenty-one, but she and Jesse Leavithe Garrett were married in that county on January 2, 1827. Both Jesse's and Betsy's families went from Virginia to Kentucky and even settled in different parts of that state -- the Andrews stopped in Monroe County while Jesse's family continued up to the Montgomery County area. There were also Garretts in Alabama, however, and perhaps Jesse decided to go South to try his luck at making a living there. Jesse was a shoemaker by trade, but it is possible that he wanted to farm as well. Betsy and Jesse stayed long enough in Madison County, Alabama to give birth to their first two sons there: Wesley A. and Richard M. Garrett, but by the time their third child, Henry T. Garrett, was born in 1831, they had relocated to Montgomery County, Kentucky and had settled near Jesse's father Robert and his wife Verlinda Cox Garrett. Other children that followed were Caroline in 1834 (married James F. Muncy), Susan Eveline in 1836 (married Lewis Jackson Roberts), Green Berry in 1838, and George who was born last and died as a child, before the 1850 census. Jesse died first, and fairly young, sometime between the time he sold 50 acres to his son Wesley in January, 1850 and the time that we pick up the trail on Betsy in the 1870 census where she is living with her daughter Susan and family in Estill County. For that 1870 census, she is listed as being a widow. Unfortunately, there is no record of when Betsy dies, either, but chances are good that she died at Estill County, Kentucky sometime before 1880. Location of her grave is unknown at this time.
