Sister Loretto Marie Adams, a former teacher, died Tuesday (March 29, 2005) at St. Louis University Hospital from injuries she suffered in a fall at her residence in Alton. She was 77.

Sister Adams was born in Alton and grew up in the St. Louis area. She entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1946 and professed her final vows in 1956. She earned two bachelor's degrees, the first in elementary education from San Diego College for Women in San Diego in 1962 and the second in music theory from the former Notre Dame College in Lemay in 1967. She earned two master's degrees, the first in music from the St. Louis Institute for Music in St. Louis in 1973 and the second in religious education from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1988.

Sister Adams taught elementary education, music and religious education for 31 years in Missouri, California and Illinois.

She taught at Holy Ghost School in St. Louis from 1950 to 1951, the former Academy of Notre Dame in Belleville from 1964 to 1967, Notre Dame High School in Lemay from 1967 to 1972 and Duchesne High School in St. Charles from 1976 to 1979.

After her teaching career, Sister Adams served in varied ministries, including director of religious education, pastoral associate, liturgist, parish administrator, director of parish music and choir director.

Since 2003, Sister Adams served as a certified ombudsman volunteer at various places in Alton, where she lived.

The memorial Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Monday at the School Sisters of Notre Dame motherhouse chapel, 320 East Ripa Avenue in Lemay. Sister Adams donated her body to St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Among the survivors are a brother, Thomas Meyers of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and a foster sister, Mary Ann Bock of St. Louis.
