He worked as a teacher at various schools in Turkey until 1944, when he was charged with agitation because of criticisms of various political figures. After a few court cases and one and one-half years in jail, he was freed in 1947. From 1949 to 1969, he worked as a historical expert at Süleymaniye Library in Istanbul. In 1967 and again in 1971, he was investigated for a series of articles criticizing government policies. In 1974, he was sentenced to prison, but was pardoned after two and one-half months. He wrote a series of novels based on an idealized version of ancient Turkish history, including Bozkurtlarýn Ölümü (Death of the Gray Wolves) and Ruh Adam (Spirit Man). His poems are collected in the book Yollarýn Sonu (The End of Roads) and his articles on Ottoman literature in Türk Tarihinde Meseleler (Problems in Turkish History). As the mentor of politician Alparslan Türkeþ, he is generally considered the ideological father of Turkey's right-wing Milliyetci Hareket Partisi (MHP; Nationalist Movement Party).
