Vyetta June (nee Hand) Albert, 92, passed to life eternal on March 7, 2016, in Quincy, Illinois. She was born in Thayer, Illinois, to Kenneth Edward and Annie Elizabeth (Griffiths) Hand. She married Eldon Eugene Albert, and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by two children: Diann Marie and Steven Wayne and four grandchildren: and 8 nieces, 8 nephews, 6 great-nieces, 6 great-nephews, and 2 great, great-nieces, and 1 great, great-nephew.
Her parents and her only brother Kenneth Eugene Hand also preceded her in death, as well as her son-in-law Charles Thomas O’Hara.
Vyetta attended elementary school in Verona, Illinois, and graduated from Enos Elementary in Springfield. She was in the first freshman class at the new Lanphier High School that attended all four years at Lanphier graduating in January 1941. Ms. Albert was on the tumbling team at Lanphier and a member of the National Honor Society. Her name still appears on a plaque hanging at Lanphier honoring those members of her class that were inducted into the National Honor Society. After graduation she attended Brown’s Business College. While attending Brown’s she joined Alpha Iota International Business Sorority and she was still a member when the Springfield Alumnae Chapter when it disbanded. She held many offices and was serving as the Advisor of that Chapter when it disbanded. She was a charter member of Gusto. This group of friends have met every month since its inception, more than 70 years ago, and still has two remaining members.
Mrs. Albert was baptized and confirmed at Third Presbyterian Church. She and her husband Eldon where married at First Presbyterian Church, and were members at Trinity United Methodist Church until that Church was dissolved. She then transferred her membership to Chatham United Methodist, where she was a member until her death.
Throughout her lifetime she worked in several establishments. She started at Sangamon Dairy while still attending Lanphier. After graduation she worked at Traveler’s Insurance, Bunn Capitol Grocery, The Medical Group, and lastly at the State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics. She was the Executive Secretary to the Director of Aeronautics and retired after 38 years at the age of 70.
She was very active after her retirement. She danced with the Golden Girls and The Silver Steppers. She also was the choreographer and instructor for The Silver Steppers for many years. As a member of The Golden Girls and The Silver Steppers she appeared in several Mature Mob shows. Her great passion throughout her life has been dancing and is very proud that her two granddaughters also have her passion for dancing. Vyetta was a sports fan if she could go to a game. She didn’t like watching sports on TV. She especially liked to watch Alec play soccer. It didn’t matter to her, what Aidan was doing, he always made her laugh and smile. She was extremely proud of her four grandchildren.
She was a member of Springfield Unit 32 of the American Legion Auxiliary and Cabane 344 of La Societe de Femme.
