Creator of local TV's 'Kitdoodle' in '49 dies
Post-Standard, The (Syracuse, NY) — Saturday, June 30, 2012
Florence "Kit" Adler, who created the TV character "Kitdoodle the Clown" in the early days of Syracuse TV, has died at the age of 84 after a brief illness. She lived in Los Angeles.
In 1949, Adler starred in "Kitdoodle" on WHEN-TV, which today is WTVH-TV. She was more than the on-air talent for the children's show; she also wrote and produced it. Later, she took the show to WNHC television station in New Haven, Conn. It was on the air from 1950 to 1952.
Adler, who was a Syracuse University graduate, also produced theatrical productions in London in the early 1960s. One of her productions, "Spoon River Anthology," starred Donald Sutherland.
Later in life, after raising her four children, she became an antiques dealer, specializing in antique toys.
Adler's younger brother Gil Cates, who produced many Academy Award shows and also was an SU grad, died last November.

Kit passed away in her Westwood home after a brief illness. One of TV's early pioneers, Kit produced, wrote and starred in the "Kitdoodle" show in Syracuse, NY in 1949 where she was dubbed "television's first local hero" and then from 1950-52 in New Haven, CT where she was called "the toast of the small fry." Kit went on to produce shows in London's West End in the early 1960s, including Spoon River. After raising 4 children, she specialized in antique toys, at the Antiquarius mall in West Hollywood for 20 years. Married to the late Gerald Adler, she was sister to the late Gil and Joe Cates. She is survived by her children Nancy, Steven, Wendy and Amy, & 5 grandchildren. We will miss her style, humor, and generosity.
