Golda Mildred Backowies, age 92, passed away at her home on November 05, 2013, her family was in attendance. Golda was born on May 06, 1921, in Scotland, South Dakota, to John Davenport and Luella (McClanahan) Davenport.
She married William Stokes and had two children in Nebraska before divorcing in 1948. Golda owned a Café in Walthill, NE, where she met and then married her husband of 35 years, Jack Backowies. The couple had four children. They farmed until their move to Lyons, CO in 1960. Then in 1961 the family moved to Longmont. There Golda worked was a waitress and factory worker for Gould Filters. She volunteer for Elder Share and her church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW in Longmont.
She and Jack owned a cabin in the mountains and spent many hours there. She loved flowers, working in her garden, cards, playing bingo and other games with her friends. She also loved canning and making homemade jam and always shared with others. She was a loving and friendly woman who will be remembered for her frankness and missed by not only by her family but by her many friends.
She was predeceased in death by her husband, and her daughters, Dorothy Torrez and Donna Stokes, and one son-in-law, Louis Holderness.
She is survived by her sons: Bob Backowies and his wife Pat of Mead, CO, and Tom Backowies and his wife Ellen of Dover, New Hampshire; her daughters, Barb Holderness of Riverside, IA, and Bonnie West and her husband Ron of Greeley, CO. She also had 13 grandchildren: Mike, Teresa, Tracy, Brenda, Jimmy Jay, Ashley, Denise, Brent, Danielle, Brook, Kimberly, Brad, and Haley; 17 great grandchildren: Travis, Dustin, Britney, Brandon, Ella, Emmalee, Jack, Joshua, Lance, Ruby, Bella, Juan Jr., Max, Mathew, Jason, Brooke Lynn and Brody, 2 great-great grandchildren; Taylor and Lucas.
