Alev was born in Ankara, Turkey. She was educated in London, England, where she graduated from college with an education degree. Alev worked for the ballet and opera, focusing on media and writing articles. She moved to Bodrum, where she met and later married Çetin Cangurel. Alev was working as a translator of Turkish to English there. She continued to do written translations until her death. They lived in Bodrum, Edremit, Assos, and Altinoluk. Alev died in Altinoluk. She had one week before brought her husband home from a hospital at Balýkesir, where he almost died while in a coma. Alev complained of a headache and was given treatment, then returned home and fell asleep watching TV, She died unexpectedly without ever waking up, probably after suffering a fatal stroke. Alev is buried at the Altinoluk Cemetery on the hillside in Altinoluk, Turkey. There is no marker at the gravesite.
