His obituary in the Greensboro Record, April 2, 1955, provides that he was a former Guilford County resident. He died in the Veterans Hospital at Long Beach, California, the city where he had lived the last 40 years.

He was born in Rockingham County, the son of Nancy Leonard and Tessman Allen. After serving in the Spanish-American War, he made his residence in Long Beach, where he was employed by the postal department, and owned and operated a hotel there.

The only listed immediate survivor was a sister, Mrs. Bell Ozment of the Rehobeth Church community.
