A former stage actor and director, he entered the film industry in 1920 as a screenwriter, writing gags and collaborating on the scripts of several Harold Lloyd comedies, including "Safety Last" (1923) and "The Freshman" (1925). He became director in the late 1920s working both in England and Hollywood. His credits include "The Murder Man" (1935, starring Spencer Tracy), "St. Martin´s Lane" (1938, with Charles Laughton), "The Thief of Baghdad" (1940, Co-dir.), "Nightmare" (1942), "Higher and Higher" (1943, with Frank Sinatra) and two Randolph Scott westerns, "Badman's Territory" (1946) and "Rage at Dawn" (1955).
