Cinematographer. John Peverell Marley joined Famous Players-Lasky directly out of Hollywood High School and before he reached the age of 24 had collaborated on the cinematography of Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" (1923). For the next 40 years, as one of the top cameramen in Hollywood, he was under contract to Warner Bros. for 20 years and with 20th Century-Fox for 10 years. His many credits include "The House of Rothschild" (1934), "Clive of India" (1935), "In Old Chicago" (1937), "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (1938), "Night and Day" (1946), "The House of Wax" (1953), "Drum Beat" (1954), "The Spirit of St. Louis" (1957), "The Left-Handed Gun" (1958) and "The Sins of Rachel Cade" (1961). He was nominated for an Academy Award for "Suez" (1938) and "Life with Father" (1947). Marley, married to actresses Lina Basquette (1929-30) and Linda Darnell (1943-52), was found dead in bed in a Santa Barbara motel room. He is one of only six cinematographers to have a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.
