William Buell, Sr., whose patents were Timothy Buell, Jr. and Mercy (Peters) Buell, married Martha Naughton 10 March 1782 at Saint John's, Lower Canada.

William and Martha Buell were the parents of Andrew Norton Buell, Phoebe (Buell) Richards, William Buell Jr., and Martha (Buell) Burritt.

He was predeceased by his wife, he then married the also widowed Margaret (Berkley) Bernard on 31 March 1827. They had one child, a daughter, who married Robert Findlay.

Buell was a United Empire Loyalist veteran of the American Revolution. During the war, he was captured twice and both times escaped. He was present at the battle of Saratoga with General Burgoyne's forces, in which he served as Assistant Quartermaster. He was subsequently commissioned an ensign in the King's Rangers and later promoted to lieutenant.

Post-war, he was granted Crown land in the vicinity of present-day Brockville, Ontario where he was very active in the politics of Upper Canada and served as a justice of the peace.

Emigrated to Canada when the American

He donated the Court House and sites for several of the churches in Brockville. He was a Member of the Upper Canada House of Assembly Possessed of a liberal mind was an honest man a kind father and friend to the poor Beloved and Respected he died in Brockville August 8 1832 in the 81st year of his age.
And in Memory of Martha Naughton Born at Farmington CT Feb 27 174 Married to William Buell Senr at St John's Lower Canada Mar 10 178 came with him to the site of Brockville in 1784 where she lived a useful life as an affectionate and good Wife and Mother proudly and beloved by all her friends She died Dec 7 1823 in the 61st year of her age
