Son of Colonel Valentine Charles Browne, CVO (5th Earl of Kenmare) and Elizabeth (Baring) Browne.

Brother of Lady Dorothy Margaret (Browne) Charteris, Lady Cecilia Kathleen (Browne) Vesey, Captain Valentine Edward Browne (6th Earl of Kenmare, formerly known as Lord Castlerosse), and Lieutenant Hon. Maurice Henry Dermot Browne.

He became the 7th Earl of Kenmare in 1943, upon the death of his elder brother Valentine Edward Browne.

Veteran of World War One, having served with the 1st Dragoons, and retired from the British Army with the rank of major.

In 1921 he became aide-de-camp (ADC) to the Lieutenant General and Governor General of Ireland. Invested an Officer of the Order of the Britsh Empire (OBE) in 1922.

Very active in local affairs, he served as President of Killarney Tourist Association, President of Killarney Golf Club, President of the County Kerry Ploughing Association, Patron of the Killarney Ploughing Society, and President of the Killarney Show Society.

Burial was in the family vault in the Blessed Virgin's Chapel at St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney.
