On Aug. 13, 2003, Matthew's father, Michael, was waiting for him to arrive at a job site that morning. When Matthew didn't show up Michael tried to call Matthew's cell phone, but there was no answer. Then he called Matthew's girlfriend, who said that she hadn't seen or talked to him in a few days. For the next four days, Michael, along with his close family and friends, searched for Matthew. Police found Matthew's truck near power lines in Carver, Mass. It was burned to a crisp, and Matthew was inside, burned beyond recognition. He was 26 years old. Michael had to provide Matthew's dental records to make a positive ID. Police say that Matthew was stabbed to death before he was set on fire. In December 2011, a jury in Plymouth Superior Court convicted Darren Caswell, 47, of Middleboro, a retired guard at Bridgewater State Prison, of second-degree murder and sentenced him to life in prison.
