Earl enlisted in the Army on October 20, 1942 in Chicago, IL and volunteered for parachutist duty.

He was assigned to Company C, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Camp Blanding, FL near Starke.

After the regiment finished basic training and prepared to move to Ft. Benning for jump school, Earl was granted 10 days leave.

During his travels he fell ill and was hospitalized for a month in Fort Thomas, KY before succumbing to his illnesses.
