Virginia Rhea Clifford went home to be with her Lord on July 15, 2017, at the age of 90. She left with the joyous certainty that she would be welcomed in her heavenly home.

Virginia was born to Henry and Lydia ’nee Laub Hager on Jan. 17, 1927, in a private home in Salesville, Montana (now known as Gallatin Gateway.) She moved with her family to their ranch in the Mulligan Canyon area west of Three Forks. She loved the country life and attended school at Eureka School District #26. The schoolhouse activities provided many happy memories for Virginia including sled races, friends, holiday parties and horseback riding.

Virginia attended high school in Three Forks. Since she lived so far from school, she boarded with various families in town including the Gilbert’s and Thoros’. She learned to play the piano from Mrs. Lyle Williams. Virginia loved music and played piano throughout her life. During her Junior year in high school she met and was engaged to Charles Clifford. Charles joined the navy and after graduation Virginia moved to Helena. She lived at the YWCA and worked at Fleigelman’s Department Store.

In March of 1945, Charley and Virginia were married in Helena at the Lutheran Church. After Charley left the Navy they moved back to her childhood ranch. During the following years she had three children, Donald, Karen and Paul. She and Charley moved to Manhattan and ranched for several more years. She was sorry to leave ranch life when they moved into Manhattan but busied herself with her family and her job at Manhattan High School. She worked as school secretary for 38 years and served in that capacity under 5 superintendents.

Virginia always loved her home and family and took joy in sewing, cooking, caring for her children, holidays and her spiritual life. She was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Three Forks for over 60 years. After they retired she accompanied Charley on several jobs building churches for Laborers for Christ. She liked the nomadic lifestyle, her sense of being useful and the wonderful people she met. In her senior years she lived in Helena and again in Manhattan.

Preceding her in death were her beloved husband Charles, her parents Henry and Lydia Hager, brother Paul, nephew Victor Hager and grandson Michael Manly. She is survived by three children Don Clifford (Sue) of Viborg, South Dakota, Karen Manly (Vann) of Helena, Paul Clifford (Gail) of Three Forks. She is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Virginia’s unwavering love and loyalty to her Lord and Savior gave her such joy. Her favorite Bible passage was Revelations 21 v. 4. “Out of darkness and into the light.”

There will be a graveside service honoring Virginia at Mount Green Cemetery in Willow Creek, Montana, at 11 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2017. Her family requests that tributes to her memory be given to Grace Lutheran Church in Three Forks, Montana.
